Collected information and use

User account

Every FairplayTrips user can create a “FairplayTrips account” in order to benefit from the following functionality:

  • Save trips and synchronize them on all their supported devices;
  • Contribute content (text, images, other elements) to FairplayTrips and be given proper credit as per the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license;
  • Discuss content contributions on FairplayTrips;
  • Leave messages on FairplayTrips forums;
  • Perform all other actions requiring a FairplayTrips account.

In order to create your account, you must provide at least the following information:

  • Your email address;
  • A password;
  • A FairplayTrips “Public name”, which may or may not be your real name.

You can also enrich your user account with optional information, which is not mandatory to access basic functionality on FairplayTrips:

  • Your first and last names;
  • Your postal address;
  • Your phone number;
  • Your birth date;
  • A picture, which may or may not be a picture of you;
  • Your preferences, including your favorite activities and points of interest.

All the above information, except your Public name, is considered private and cannot be accessed by other FairplayTrips users.

Your FairplayTrips Public name is visible by everyone, and is used in all attribution clauses attached to your contributions to FairplayTrips.

A key functionality offered by FairplayTrips is the creation of “trips”. A trip in FairplayTrips is a set of information gathered by a user and useful for her touristic activities.

By default, all trips created on FairplayTrips are private. This means that only you or the people (with or without a FairplayTrips account) you have explicitly shared your trip with can view your trip.

It is possible to mark any trip that you have created as “public” by selecting the appropriate option in the trip sharing page. In the case where you have set your trip to be public, any FairplayTrips user will have access to your trip’s information. It is possible to change your trip visibility at any time, bearing in mind that, when a trip has been set to public once, another user may have made a copy of it at that time.

In order to facilitate the sharing of trips between FairplayTrips users, and if you have a FairplayTrips account, you have the opportunity to create a contact list linked to your account. Only you know the content of that list, and you only have access to your contacts’ public name.

When you create a contact relationship with another user, you also become a contact for that user. In the same way, your contacts only know your public name.

All users with a FairplayTrips account can vote to express a positive or negative opinion on content elements available on FairplayTrips. Your individual votes are not public, and can only be known by you. However, they are used in non-identifying and aggregate manner to build and make available further useful information to FairplayTrips users.

Technical information

When you connect with FairplayTrips, with or without a FairplayTrips account, we collect the technical information typically collected by web sites, including your IP address, your operating system, you browser version or the date and time of your access. For technical reasons, FairplayTrips may keep raw logs of such transactions, but these will not be published or used to track legitimate users.

Location data

In case you use one of FairplayTrips mobile applications, you can explicitly request to be geolocalized. Your location information is not transferred to nor collected on FairplayTrips servers.

FairplayTrips uses cookies to provide certain features like your login status or to recognize that you may have requested that we remember your username and password so you don't need to enter your details each time you visit the site.

A cookie is a small piece of information that is stored on a computer for the purpose of identifying your web browser during interaction on websites.

You may configure your browser to accept all cookies, reject all cookies, or notify you when a cookie is set. As each browser is different, please check the "Help" menu of your browser to learn how to change your cookie preferences.

If you reject all cookies, you may not be able to use FairplayTrips services that require you to “sign in”, and you may not be able to take full advantage of FairplayTrips overall.

Other uses of information

FairplayTrips only collect your personal information to improve the services offered to its users.

Use of your email address

We do not share your email address with any third party.

We only send messages to your email address to make your use of FairplayTrips services more convenient, notably on the following occasions:

  • Reinitialize your password;
  • Inform you that a contact request or invitation has been accepted or rejected;
  • Inform you that one of your contacts wants to share a trip with you;
  • A travel business owner has commented a review that you have left for her place.

Non-identifying and aggregate information

We use non-identifying and aggregate information to improve FairplayTrips services and suggest popular content to users (points of interest or destinations).

For example:

  • We may tell users which points of interest are included in the most trips (private or public);
  • We indicate the number of positive and negative votes for various elements (traveler reviews among others).

When information is used in this or a similar manner, we do not disclose anything that could be used to identify the individuals on whom the information is based.

Access to and release of personally identifiable information

FairplayTrips does not permit distribution of personally identifiable information, except in the following situations:

  • In response to a valid subpoena or other compulsory request from law enforcement;
  • With permission of the affected user;
  • When necessary for investigation of abuse complaints;
  • Where the user has been persistently behaving in a disruptive way, data may be released to a service provider, carrier, or other third-party entity to assist in the targeting of IP blocks, or to assist in the formulation of a complaint to relevant Internet Service Providers;
  • Where it is reasonably necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of FairplayTrips, its users or the public.

Access to and modification of your personal information

In accordance with the French law passed on 6th January 1978 relative to information technology, digital data and civil liberties, and with article 43 of the modified law passed on the 30th September 1986, you have the right to access and modify the personal data that concerns you.

You can modify your personal information at any time on “Your Home Page” under “Your Profile” section.

As we ensure that proper attribution clauses are attached to your contributions to FairplayTrips (including your public name), your account may not be removed. However, you can modify all information that concerns you, including your public name, so that your identity can be made less obvious.

You can stop all collection of information by FairplayTrips by ceasing to use the site and uninstalling the applications.

The safety of your personal information is important to us.

We strongly limit the collection of personally identifiable user data and we have put in place appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online. However, despite our efforts, no security controls are 100% effective and FairplayTrips cannot ensure or warrant the security of your personal information.

Password security

When you create your account on FairplayTrips, you must select a password, which is confidential and used to verify the integrity of your account.

FairplayTrips does not know your password in clear and passwords are stored under an encrypted format (salted hash).
